Roshven
Farm is situated in Moidart, 30 miles West of Fort William, in an area of considerable
natural beauty. |
|
It enjoys
a rare commodity - peace and quiet - with magnificent views of the Hebridean Islands
to the west and mountains all around. Our small sheep and highland cattle farm
is on the shores of Loch Ailort, a sea loch that opens into the Sound of Arisaig.
The highest hill for quite a distance - Roisbheinn - rises steeply out of the
loch at the back of the farm to just under 3000 feet. For the adventurous, the
views from the top are almost too spectacular to describe. We
are in an excellent position for those who want to tour Lochaber and even further
afield - whether it is a boat trip to Skye and the Small Isles, a ride on the
steam train or just a walk in the hills. There is a wealth of history in Moidart,
not least the associations with 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' and the Jacobite movement;
and with all the natural flora and fauna you will run out of time to see and do
it all. We
hope you enjoy using our website - from learning about the fabulous paintings
& sketches of Jemima Blackburn, to booking a visit to stay in our chalets. Farm
Holidays provides information to those of you who would like to experience
the peace and quiet and magnificent views that Roshven has to offer by staying
in one of our five purpose built chalets. Jemima
Blackburn and her husband, Hugh Blackburn, bought Roshven Estate in 1854,
during which time she painted her family and friends, important visitors and local
people going about their everyday work: cutting peat, gathering bracken, making
hay and many other rural activities. This Scots girl was to become one of the
foremost illustrators of the Victorian Age, achieving widespread recognition under
the initials JB or her married name Mrs Hugh Blackburn.
During your holiday, why not
step back in time a hundred and fifty years? Re-visit the places Jemima loved
and painted. Watch the same birds which she illustrated so vividly in her "Birds
from Moidart" and "Birds drawn from Nature." Farm
